Regardless of whether you exercise and eat healthily every day or not, by the time you begin edging into your 40s or 50s, the signs of aging will no doubt begin to take a hold on your skin.
Your skin has had to take years of being beaten and weathered by any number of elements, both external and internal. These include:
- damage from the sun and environmental pollution
- irritations from stress and other illnesses
- bumps, lumps, cuts and bruises

Whilst on paper it seems as if the odds are not stacked in your favour, there are a few techniques and practices you can try to retain that youthful glow and leave your skin feeling as healthy as ever.
To give you a good idea of where to start, we’ve included our four favourite tips for giving your skin a little spruce up below:
1. Exercise Your Face Muscles
As Sally Penford mentions above, when your body begins to slow down, your face also begins to look a lot looser. So how can you keep your face from loosening up and wrinkling?
The elasticity of our face relies on a protein known as collagen to remain strong. As this collagen wears away (a process which takes longer for men, which is why they wrinkle later in life), our faces begin to show deep furrows, and our skin tends to head southwards.
There are natural supplements readily available, such as Aminoguanidine, which help to protect these proteins, and aid in reducing the effects of ageing on the skin.
Of course, you could try rubbing your face. Although it may sound silly, by massaging the skin in a circular motion you’re actually helping to promote circulation and muscle growth to better combat ageing.
It would also be wise to cut back on drinking, as alcohol dilates blood vessels within the face and puts collagen and elastin under a lot of unnecessary pressure.
2. Stop Those Spots
Whilst having a perfectly tanned body may have been a plus point during your youth, too much sun can actually cause more damage than good as we proceed into the later stages of life.
You may have noticed small flat greyish brown spots forming in certain places on your body. These are an instantaneous giveaway for age, as they usually only begin to form once we’re over 50.
Typically labelled sun spots (although they are also known as age, or liver spots), these small blemishes are painless, and are very often harmless in the long run. However, they can often be mistake for melanoma, a severe form of skin cancer, as both are caused by prolonged exposure to the sun’s harmful UV rays. It’s well worth consulting your local GP or doctor if notice any new irregularities on the surface of your skin.
When it comes to reducing these spots, we recommend a specialised cream, like BEC5 Curaderm, which utilises natural extracts to act quickly and reduce persistent skin blemishes without the need for invasive surgery.

Drinking plenty of water can help replenish lost fluids, leaving you and your skin feeling refreshed and ready.
